Howl-O-Ween Pet Safety

There is nothing to it really, however a few tips are in order for new pet owners

Help Your Pets Have a Safe Howl-O-Ween

With Halloween approaching it is important to pay special attention to our special furry friends. They can be easily overlooked when festivities are occurring and the holiday poses several potential problems for your Pets.

Treats

Keep track of the candy wrappers as well as the candy. Pets will ingest either. Candy wrappers can cause irritation to the pet’s digestive system.

Chocolate is toxic to animals – It contains substances called methylxanthines. Baking chocolate or dark chocolates will contain the greatest quantities of this substance. Ingestion can result in vomiting, diarrhea, panting, thirst, tremors, seizures, and even potentially death.

Some gum and candy may contain Xylitol, a sweetener.

It can trigger insulin release and a subsequent and dangerous drop in blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

Symptoms may include lethargy, vomiting, loss of coordination, collapse and seizures.

Tricks

Make sure your pet is kept inside and confined to a safe place where the pet will be less disturbed by noise and activity.

Quantities of trick-or-treaters can put a Pet on edge.

Pets may bolt out a door if not monitored and especially if they are frightened.

If a Pet is unsupervised outdoors they are at risk of harm or theft. Unsupervised, outside dogs can also easily pose a threat to children.

Decorations can also pose a hazard to pets. Streamers, glow sticks, plastic decorations, and parts of costumes are among the holiday items that can be easily ingested by pets.

Jack-o-lanterns can pose a fire hazard if knocked over. Supervise your Pet’s play and try to keep decorations out of your Pet’s reach.

Costumes

Dressing up our pets can be fun and the pets can enjoy the extra attention as well. For some pets though, it is just a frightening experience. Make sure that your pet’s vision is not obstructed and that the costume is not restricting breathing or movement.

For example, in the photo below, the costume was removed immediately after the picture was taken.

A pet that is feeling uncomfortable or cannot see well will be more likely to bite. Always supervise your pet when you have your pet in costume. If your pet gets tired of wearing the costume your pet may decide to chew at it and possibly ingest pieces of it.

If you want your pet to be more comfortable in the costume it is a good idea to put the costume on your pet for short periods before the holiday so it will feel more familiar before the party or photo shoot event.

Advanced Care wishes you and your pets safe and happy Howl-O-Ween

A vet where you will feel right at home

  • We are not the largest veterinary clinic in town. As a matter of fact, may well be the smallest. That does not mean we skimp on service to you or quality of our products and equipment.
  • We're clean, contemporary and often relatively quiet than our counter parts. Being small does have it's advantages.
  • Advanced Care Pet Hospital is literally growing one pet at a time. That is fine by us and our clients appreciate that one-to-one contact. We don't have some of the overhead costs enjoyed by others in the area.
  • Some people have called us the hardest working pet hospital in the region. We offer full Weekend hours and put in 12 hours a day on weekdays.
  • We give you accurate estimates and never surprise you at checkout time with an invoice that doesn't match the estimate.
  • That's how we operate.
